No kelp dredging

Ban Mechanical Kelp Dredging in Scotland

There is a danger that our beautiful kelp forests in West Scotland will be mechanically dredged.  This involves using a mechanical rake, about 4m across to pull the kelp up by its roots.  The base of the kelps will be dumped to rot on beaches or at sea.  Then chemicals such as formaldehyde will be used to process the kelp, and, in all probability, the used chemical waste dropped at sea.  This will mean losses of many sorts – including less habitat to fish and shellfish, reduced food to seals, otters and seabirds, more coastal erosion and more climate change gases making the sea more acidic.

Please contact your MSP and ask them to vote to stop this threat.  And please go to the Stop Mechanical Kelp Dredging petition on Change.org and look at Twitter #savethekelp.

Thank you!
